Here at Studio North Homes we strive to make sure every homeowner understands the history behind each design decision. In this article we go over what makes a kitchen modern. Our influence over designs is always second to each home owners preferences. We do always urge functionality, timelessness, and durability. At the core of a modern kitchen, you find a space that is highly organized literally and visually. A modern kitchen tries to reduce the visual information overload that is so present in your typical kitchen.
We made this diagram to show the difference. The visual clutter we refer to is all of the different 'parts' that look distinct, almost clumped together.
Counter Depth and Appliance Panels: By choosing appliances like a counter-depth fridge, and panel-ready items like refrigerators and dishwashers, your kitchen immediately begins to take on uniform look. The lines of the space are aligned and there are not masses jutting out into the space. Also, the range hood can be hidden, and microwave/ ovens integrated into the cabinetry away from the range.
Handles: Using tap-to-open cabinets, or using channel-pulls as the hardware for opening cabinets, allows wood veneer panels to show off their beauty. Again, clean lines!
Thin Profiles: Notice the top of the upper cabinets. The 'scribe board' is the piece of material that goes between the cabinet box and the kitchen ceiling. This is a piece of material a wood worker must 'scribe', or sand down to match the slight grooves of the ceiling. This makes for a clean finish. A modern kitchen will minimize this piece of trim to emphasize the beauity of the wood veneer cabinets, and create a thin 'relief' line or shadow line that creates a soft profile for the kitchen cabinets.
Open Concept Layouts: One of the defining features of modern kitchens is their open layout. They are often seamlessly integrated with the living or dining areas, creating a more inclusive and spacious environment. This design trend encourages interaction, making the kitchen a central hub for socializing while cooking.
Sleek and Minimalistic Design: Modern kitchens tend to embrace minimalism with clean lines, sleek surfaces, and clutter-free spaces. Cabinetry often features simple designs with handle-less doors, giving a streamlined and contemporary look.
Innovative Appliances: Technology has revolutionized kitchen appliances. Smart refrigerators, touch-screen ovens, induction cooktops, and energy-efficient dishwashers are just a few examples of modern appliances that have become standard in today’s kitchens, offering convenience and efficiency.
Integration of Technology: From voice-activated assistants to integrated charging stations, modern kitchens are incorporating technology in various forms to streamline tasks and enhance the cooking experience.
Diverse Materials: While older kitchens often favored traditional materials like wood and granite, modern kitchens explore a wider array of materials. Quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass backsplashes, and composite materials are popular choices for achieving a contemporary aesthetic.
Ample Storage Solutions: Innovations in storage solutions have transformed how kitchen space is utilized. From pull-out pantry shelves to hidden cabinets and multi-functional islands with built-in storage, modern kitchens prioritize organization and efficiency.
Emphasis on Sustainability: There's a growing trend toward eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient appliances in modern kitchens. Homeowners are opting for sustainable materials like bamboo or recycled glass for countertops, as well as energy-saving lighting and appliances to reduce their environmental footprint.
Personalized Touches: While modern kitchens often have a uniform, minimalist look, they also allow for personalization. Homeowners are adding unique touches through custom lighting fixtures, bold backsplashes, or statement pieces to infuse their personality into the space.
Multi-functional Spaces: Modern kitchens are designed to serve multiple purposes. They aren’t just for cooking; they are also spaces for entertaining, working, and even relaxing. Kitchen islands often double as eating areas or workspaces, adapting to the diverse needs of modern lifestyles.
Efficient Workflow: Functionality is key in modern kitchen design. There's an emphasis on optimizing the workflow by strategically placing appliances, sinks, and work areas to create an efficient and ergonomic workspace for cooking and food preparation.
