Love where you live. Brighter, beautiful, and more natural.
A custom home must strike a graceful balance of often counter-intuitive forces- a kitchen can be the messiest place of a home or the most highly organized, a location could lack privacy and be transformed to give a sense of exploration, your home might have walls when what you need is light. Homeowners will find with us that we create solutions that are hard to imagine, and that our designs answer problems before they are even noticed or found. The complexity of home design is a highly personal pursuit for which we put a great effort into understanding the nuisances of each individual and their lifestyles. The final design is a direct reflection of each family and person.
To love where you live, we believe in finding organization, order, energy, inspiration and balance. That is beautiful design.
Modern Farmhouse
The modern farmhouse is trending as a relatable way to bring bright post and beam homes into the New England vernacular, without dedicating to the strong associations with flat-roofs that many feel. Our designs for the Stowe Vermont Farmhouse help blur the boundary of nature and home by opening up vistas to the nearby pond with a sunroom. We also brought nature into the home with one of our signature plant walls, that cascade alongside an open-riser staircase. The passage of light and air throughout the whole open is the type of refreshingly modern features we love the most.

Wave House
Gloucester is known for its brilliant coastline, fresh lobster, and unique New England shingle style homes. Wave House is a statement on complimenting the Coastline with curves that mimic the oceans waves. Gloucester has a rocky and tumultuous tide that crashes upon barrier rocks. Wave House is a modern interpritation of shingle style New England architecture by using a modern post and beam framing system, modern proportions for windows and room sizes, and contemporary finishes like vertical cedar boards that withstands the salty coastal air, but still show case the beautiful grain of wood as an intimate and up close finish in the patio area. The Building system for the barrel vault roof was an array of glue laminated timbers. "Gluelams" are a type of beam that is stronger than standard wood beams. They are engineered by layering smaller pieces of wood and casting them together. Beautiful and linear, they can be hidden or exposed. The barrel vaulted roof featured in this space maximizes the ceiling height of the room. Acoustics in spaces with curved roofs are actually very uniform and more evenly distributed than cathedral ceilings. Guests feel more comfortable conversing during large gatherings. Wave house is a 3100 square foot home comprised of 4 bedrooms, 4 baths, a kitchen, a butlers pantry, and a barrel vaulted great room.

Additional Dwelling Unit (ADU), guest house, or in-law suite. This home is sitting gracefully in the vast embayment of the Essex salt marsh. These types of spaces have been in-demand in some of the most scenic areas of the United States. Conservative zoning demands small footprints, smaller septic tanks, and roof heights that keep structures smaller than the local Juniperus Virginiana are just some of the rules that need to be honored.

An accessory dwelling unit of 900 square feet can feel like more than enough space for a home. We believe when you add a unit to your property, it should be stunning. Our pre-designed ADUs are organized, balanced, and bright. With code requirements from Towns and the State restricting the size of ADUs, it's important to design for a space that sheds visual boundaries in a few areas. In architecture we call this making clear site lines. Our 'Skyline' Unit does exactly this with it's sunny loft space. We believe in courtyard homes- some of our residential design formats are the ancient Hutong courtyard homes. We have learned the importance of views to the sky with a denser urban fabric, as well as powerfully organizes spaces that encourage movement in many directions. This makes the space feel unrestricted, large, and what we see as a requirement for any good ADU.
Various Renovations and Additions
We find a home, we fall in love, and sometimes we decide that a place we are going to stay for a long time should be enhanced. A renovation and addition can be a solution to staying in your home, if you're feeling well-rooted. Below are some photos of projects that are either reno, addition, or both. Additionally, read our blog post about doing additions to find out more about anticipating costs.
Coastal Modern Home Design
Design inspiration for a modern coastal home. Beach dunes are everchanging with the winds. Sand actually will build up next to areas of foot traffic. A hummock is the mound of sand that rises above coastal marshes. Similiarly, this project was designed as a one level home that was nestled into the black oaks and bayberry of the dunes. The mid-century style home is graceful and low to the ground, an ecologically respectful decision that minimizes light pollution to the beach. A breezeway seperates the main living area from the guest wing, operating as an operably dynamic space can be enclosed or open on both sides. The Spring and Summer breeze helps convect warm air from the wood burning fireplace from the breezeway to the patio for late night gatherings. Accessibility in design is an oppurtunity for us to build a timeless one level home. With regulatory restrictions on building height, our team designed the home to have low to ground access to the elements. Summer is about forgetting your shoes before you walk out of your home and down to the beach. Overall this 2460 square foot home contains 3 bedrooms and three bathrooms, featuring two common areas that allow guest to flow from activity to activity, and enableing moments of privacy and quieter comfort while maintaining a central node for a larger gathering.
